Where should you visit when you travel to West Malaysia? KLCC in Kuala Lumpur? Georgetown in Penang? or A Famosa in Melaka? These tourist spots are one of the main highlights when you travel to West Malaysia, but if you are looking for a more unique and local experience, you may like this selection of some less unknown places – the hidden gems of West Malaysia.
I’m not telling you to skip the tourist spot in West Malaysia, they are all well worth visiting (especially when you are first time travelling to West Malaysia). But if you want to travel deeper and experience the local side of West Malaysia, then this list of hidden gems might give you some ideas for your trip in West Malaysia.
All the hidden gems listed in this blog post are carefully selected based on my own travel experiences as I wanted to include only the most special, cool and unique places that are truly worth your time.
🌿 Klang, Selangor
Klang is a royal town and former capital of Selangor and is famous for its Bak Kut Teh. Bak Kut Teh is a popular dish in Malaysia and is a pork rib dish cooked in a broth of herbs and spices. You should try the first Bak Kut Teh in Malaysia at Teck Teh Bak Kut Teh Restaurant. Before that, you may join a free guided walking tour which organised by Tourism Selangor to know more about Klang.
🌿 Hulu Langat, Selangor
Hulu Langat is located in Selangor, in between Kuala Lumpur and Negeri Sembilan, and is popular its recreational activities and natural surroundings. It is a popular spot to the local tourist for recreational activities due to it is near to Kuala Lumpur city. Among the popular spot for eco-tourism are Sungai Gabai Waterfalls, and Sungai Congkak Recreational Forest. If you are looking for something more adventurous, you may visit Skytrex Adventure which is located beside of the Sungai Congkak Recreational Forest.
🌿 Tree Top Walk Sungai Sedim, Kedah
Tree Top Walk is one of the hidden gems of Kedah, it is the longest canopy walk in the world with a length of 925 metres and a height of 26 metres up above the forest floor at its highest point. It is located in Sungai Sedim Recreational Park which is about 30 minutes drive from Kulim in Kedah.
🌿 Seremban, Negeri Sembilan
Seremban is a capital of Negeri Sembilan and is situated 60km from Kuala Lumpur (around 1 hour of driving). Negeri Sembilan is influenced by Minangkabau’s culture which is famous for its unique roof architecture which resembles buffalo horns. There are a lot of buildings in Seremban adapted this feature, such as Negeri Sembilan State Museum.
Before you visit Negeri Sembilan State Museum, you may pay a visit to Jabatan Perkhidmatan Veterinar Negeri Sembilan. You can find a lot of animals here, such as deer, horses, ostrich, goats and etc.
🌿 Kemaman, Terengganu
Kemaman is located in Terengganu and it has a lot of beaches, less unknown but worth visiting, such as Kemasik Beach. You can learn more about the sea turtles and experience watching the yearly affair of nesting in Monica Bay.
🌿 Kampung Sungai Melayu, Johor Bahru, Johor
Kampung Sungai Melayu is a century-old Malay Traditional Village, about 15 minute drive from Johor Bahru. You should take a short trip on a boat to visit the floating mussel farm and learn something about mussels.
So, here are some of the less known places in West Malaysia for your travel list. I believe that visiting at least some of these hidden gems will make your trip to Malaysia more special and more memorable!
